Team Sailing
Team Sailing offers a venue for people to learn different kinds of leadership skills, team values and other positive behavioral inputs. Particularly for those working in a corporate or office setting learning certain team values is very valuable. Leadership in most workplaces these days tend to be very complex and responsibilities inside the company do not just rest with the just the manager or a single person. Everyone in the workplace has his or her own set of responsibilities to meet goals and make things work. There are many roles essential to an organization. All members of the company should be able to assume their position and accomplish their tasks.
The same kind of environment is observed with sailboat conditions. Sailing is complex venue and there are several components and tasks needed to be done all the same time to make sure the trip will go smoothly. Everyone aboard has an important role. The sailing team’s success depends on how each member plays their roles. Just like in a workplace, each member needs to check on each other and make sure they perform their duties. Each individual is accountable.
Areas of responsibility
When people go on a team sailing activity, they get to learn and apply several areas of responsibility. These include manning the boat, at the helm, as well as coaching each member on how to do their job. There is also risk taking and each member has to depend and give their trust to the other member. A person’s responsibility is emphasized. No matter how small the role is, team sailing teaches individual that each task can contribute or impede the success of the whole team.
Team assessment
Usually, when you sign up for team sailing, the Coastguard Certified Captains will assign your group to work with 24- to 36-foot sailboats. Activities for team sailing include jibing, covering tacking, steering and overall sail handling. Team sailing is also about competition. Depending on the condition of the weather and the type of body water, teams will be asked to participate in a time trial or a regatta. The teams need to apply the skill they have. Members need to work together to get to the finish line. Following the activity, an assessment of the team will be done. Leadership styles, communication patterns as well as the decision-making process will be considered. The effective of the team will be evaluated and from there effective measures and flaw will be identified. This will help the team identify how to improve cooperation within the group.
