Throughout all ages, simple, small boats have always been included amongst archeological finds. These small vessels, were used for transport by river, using no masts or sails. However, one such a find discovered such a small boat, complete  with socket for a mast and holes for rigging. This proves that even in that age, some sea travelling did occur. Boats have always been an important factor throughout the history of mankind, and even in this day and age are used for all kinds of purposes. Be it the gondolas in Italy, the ferry to England, or the large commercial oil tanker. Boats are used for all intends and purposes ranging from commuter travel to carrying cargo.

Several small boats called Skiffs

Skiff is a general reference to several types of smalls boats. Depending on the location, the term can be more specific, like in the United States referring to a skiff, typically means a small boat intended for catching fish at sea. Skiffs, like with most small boats are typically constructed out of wood. Typically for fishing, they would have a flat bottom and a pointed hull, with a flat stern. In today’s times they are powered mostly by outboard motors, instead of the sails that used to power them. However, this does not mean the sails have been done away with, they are still very much used in Skiff sailing competitions.

Smalls vessels that are hard to control

In competitions, the skiff is the hardest to control, when sails are used, due to the narrow bow. In this category, Australia has produced the fastest skiff, available; an 18′type of boat, but also the hardest to sail of its kind. In order to handle a skiff, quick reactions and general alertness are required, in order to counteract any sudden changes, that can occur with this type of small boat.
Being able to respond quickly to these changes, is a must when operating a Skiff.

Small boats, for all intends and purposes

It would be wrong, to think all Skiffs are created for sailing purposes. They are used for all kinds of purposed, like transporting things across lakes, guiding boats, and fishing boats. There also are inflatable versions of the Skiff available.

In conclusion, A skiff is a small boat, still used, for all kinds of purposes, just like the small vessels our ancestors used, many ages ago. It shows us that the influences of times long gone, are still with us in these modern times.
