Popular Sailing Dinghies

dinghies for sailing

Dinghies designed for sailing serve two purposes: for racing and for leisure. Sailing dinghies built for racing are streamlined to be sleek on the water, but they’re not very stable. Only professional sailors can handle them well to avoid capsizing. Sailing dinghies use for cruising on lakes, rivers, and seas, however, are more stable and easy to handle by one or two people. These types of dinghy sailboats are suited for families who want to have fun sailing during a free time. Examples of dinghy sailboats for racing are the International 420 Class Dinghy and the Musto Performance Skiff, while the Minto Sailing Dinghy and the Optimist Sailing Dinghy are used for leisure.

The International 420 Class Dinghy

These popular sailing dinghies maintained the original design by Christian Maury, which are sailed by two people in a trapeze. The dinghy sailboat is very competitive and popular in school, club, national, and international competitions. The design is very stable with sealed buoyancy tanks and Styrofoam flotation that keeps the dinghy sailboat well above water even if holed. The spinnaker drags the boat on the water allowing it to reach top speeds for racing.

The Musto Performance Skiff

This dinghy sailboat prides itself in terms of speed and incredible looks; it’s a head turner wherever it may be – cruising on waters in top speed or being towed to its next adventure. It’s sailed by a one sailor in a trapeze following the original design by Joachim Harpprecht, and this dinghy sailboat is very popular in Europe. The makers can boast the fact that majority of all winning single-handed dinghy sailboat is a Musto Performance Skiff.

The Minto Sailing Dinghy

The Minto Sailing Dinghy is a popular boat used for a day of fun and adventure sailing for an entire family. The original design was conceived by Hugh Rodd and the earliest versions of Mintos are made entirely from wood. Now, you can already buy a fiberglass version of Mintos that are as sturdy and as stable on the water for leisurely afternoon cruise.

The Optimist Sailing Dinghy

Other popular sailing dinghies used for fun are the Optimists. Unlike the Minto, however, the Optimist is single handed more suited to train young children who are into sailing. The safety and easy maneuverability of an Optimist dinghy makes it popular to use in schools as training dinghy or as a racing dinghy too.
