International Tall Ships Race in 2010

Sail Training International is ready for another Tall Ships Race this coming July 10 to August 10, 2010. The race routes are plotted and the events to each pit stop port are already ironed for the participants to enjoy. The Tall Ships Race in 2010 is expected to deliver another spectacular race time for young sailors on their tall ships that mimics the feeling of what’s it like to sail in the olden days. Each year, some 5 to 6 thousand young sailors from 30 countries go to Europe to participate in the international tall ships regatta, and the same numbers if not more are expected this year.

The Tall Ships Race is organized by Sail Training International, a non-profit organization whose thrust is to educate young people about sailing regardless of color and creed. Aside from Tall Ships Race, Sail Training International also holds conferences and seminars, create training materials, conduct international researches, and facilitate forums all for young sailors’ education. The organization’s members are National Sails Training Organizations from almost 50 countries from around the world. Tall ships race 2010 specification

The two most defined requirements to join Tall Ships Race is, of course, to use a tall ship for the race and each ship’s crew should consist of more than 50 percent young people from the age of 15 to 25. The young sailors don’t have to have previous sailing experience as long as they are enthusiastic enough to learn and experience sailing onboard a tall ship. The participating tall ships should have at least 9.4 meters length and monohull without restrictions of the kind of sail it uses. The tall ships must be training ships used by charities, navies, schools, and other sailing organizations conducting training.

Leg for 2010 Tall Ships Races

This year, the leg will start in Antwerp where the ships are berthed in River Scheldt from July 10 to 13. The Tall Ships Race 2010 will start on July 14 from Antwerp to its first pit stop in Aalborg; designated waypoint is provided. From Aalborg, the fleet will be directed to Kristiansand in Norway, which is the starting point of the second leg of the race ending in Hartlepool in the United Kingdom where the race festivity highlights will be held.
