Heysham Ferry Services
4-2-2010
The Heysham ferry services include passenger ferries from England to Ireland and the Isle of Man and freight ferries from England to Ireland. There are conventional ferries sailings to the Isle of Man as well as SuperCat sailings during peak season by Steam Packet Line Ferries and two freight ships from Norfolkline ferrying cargos from England direct to Ireland. Heysham port is well connected to major highways in Great Britain and has the shortest distance to the Isle of Man so that most island tourists start from Heysham. And because of the port’s excellent freight facilities, two of Norfolkline’s freight ferries use the Heysham-Belfast route to transport cargo from UK to Ireland.
Heysham Ferry Passenger Service
The Heysham port accommodates only one passenger liner, Steam Packet Line Ferry, which serves both fastcraft and conventional ferry crossings to the Isle of Man. The Ben-my-Chree, a conventional ferry, sails twice a day all year round from Heysham to Douglas in the island, and during peak season, the trips are augmented by fastcrafts operated by the same liner. The conventional ferry can carry only small vehicles and motorcycles, but a special arrangement for larger cargos can be arranged by calling the liner’s office. The fastcraft on the other hand is strictly for foot passengers only.
Heysham Ferry Freight to Ireland
Norfolkline operates two freight ferries, Maersk Exporter and Maersk Importer, from Heysham to Belfast. Heysham and Norfolkline are even capable of handling hazardous or abnormal cargos, but shippers must inform the company about the cargo ahead to allow enough time for necessary preparations. Freight drivers are well accommodated by Norfolkline by providing them with ensuite cabin accommodation to relax during the 9 hours sailings. The Norfolkline freight service is one of the most punctual in northern Europe with 98% on time arrivals, and all Norfolkline ferries implement rules to promote green shipping.
Heysham Ferry Port
The Heysham passenger terminal is complete with TV and video lounge area, children’s play area, baby chancing room, a cafeteria, and disabled-people-friendly facilities for the passengers. The port is just 3.5 miles away from major highways and is accessible by car or coach, and it’s the closest port to the Isle of Man.
