There are many things to consider before it is decided to buy a boat.
One of the most common sayings about boats is that they are “water holes”, to pour money in. Another saying is that there are only two happy days in the life of a boat owner: The first being the day he sets out to buy a boat and purchases it, and the second that day that he sells the ship again. Though many believe these saying to be true, they do not have to be. All it takes is the right approach and a proper understanding of what it takes to maintain a boat.

Before  the purchase of a boat

Most unhappy owners of a boat are unhappy, because they simply buy the wrong boat. Before becoming the owner of a boat there are things that should be considered first.

  • Who will make use of it? Will it be family only, or are trips with friends also a point of consideration? This may be a crucial factor in determining the size the boat should be.
  • What will the boat be used for? Is it for Fishing purposes, or just pleasure trips? Are water sports a factor? In case it is used for trips, how long will these trips be?
  • How often is the boat used? Is it used all through the year, or at specific seasons only?
  • Where will the boat be used? Will it be on lakes, rivers or the ocean?
  • What is the budget? Are there enough funds available to buy and maintain the boat? The initial buying costs are merely the beginning. There will also be maintenance, insure and registration costs to consider.
  • What type of boat will be purchased? Will it be used to getting from place to place at high speed, or will it sail to its destination without regard for time?

Learn the terms before buying a boat

There is much documentation on buying a boat, there are plenty of books available at the library and at the local book store, Learn the proper terms, have a look at the local marina and talk with people that already own their boats, and find out the pros and cons of owning a boat. Learn about different types of boats and how they perform and most importantly learn the strong and weak spots of these different types of boats.

Buying a new or a used boat

A brand new ship is a beautiful thing to look at, but can also come with its own specific set of problems. It is highly advised to make sure the boat comes under full warranty, so any repairs or maintenance is performed by the dealer or manufacturer of the ship. Make sure to buy a boat that will actually spend more time on the water then at the port getting repairs or maintenance.
When buying a used boat it is more than likely that this boat will not be free of problems either, and searching for the right one can be a headache of its own. When a boat is found it is recommended that it is inspected by a reputable surveyor to ensure the boat is everything as advertised.
