Today, the only operational tall sailing ship in the U.S. maritime service is the Eagle. Aside from being one of the symbols of the U.S. Coastguard, the Eagle also serves as training vessel and classroom of the U.S. Coastguard Academy. The Eagle educates the students about the elements at sea, which the students will live with throughout their career in the coastguard even though they will graduate to using mechanized, modern coastguard fleet later. Eagle is very good at teaching the students to respect the sea as the coastguard claims.
