There are basically two Cork ferries operators that serve the route from Cork, Ireland to Wales and France: the deposed Swansea Cork Ferries, and the Brittany Ferries. Swansea Cork Ferries served the Cork to Swansea, Wales route until 2006 when the company could not find a replacement of their m/v Superferry. But in March 2010, a new ferry company, the Fastnet Line, will again serve the Swansea-Cork route, which should be a welcome relief to many Cork tourists and regular passengers from Britain. The port in Cork also serves sailings to and from France via the Brittany Ferries.

Swansea Cork Ferries replacement

On March, 2010, the old Swansea Cork Ferries will be replaced by a new liner: the Fastnet Line. The new liner is brought to life by the efforts and generosity of private investors from Cork, Kerry, and South Wales who saw the importance of a car ferry who will serve the Cork-Swansea route once again. Hence, the liner is dubbed “The People’s Ferry,” which will operate as a private company under a co-operative system.

The first fleet to roll from Fastnet Line is the m/s Julia, which can take 1,860 passengers, 440 cars, and about 30 trucks. It will have onboard cinema, kid’s area, pet kennels, shops, restaurants, and bars aside from cabins for the passengers.

Brittany Ferries serve one sailing per week from Roscoff to Cork and back, which takes about 14 hours each way. Since it takes some time to cross the route, Brittany Ferries offered their cruise ferry service along this route. There are plenty of things to do to entertain yourself during the crossing; you can even make it a short holiday trip onboard a budget cruise ship.
